Coley’s Picking Adventures

I had quite an adventure last week.  My mom and I took my boys to go see “Grandpa Cowboy”.  He is my mom’s dad and a true cowboy.  He is 84 years old and wakes up at 4am every morning and hops on his horse and is out on the ranch all day!  We really enjoyed our time with him.

My Grandpa had gone to our last Market back in September and was excited to start gathering “junk” for me.  He got me some great stuff, but my favorite are these pieces.  A glass door knob painted white and turquoise and a US marker that was used in WWII on horse bridles to show they belonged to the US Calvary.

On Thursday we were planning on leaving mid morning to head back home.  My grandpa mentions that there were more door knobs where he found this one.  I told him I wanted more, so he said it was just 15 miles away in an abandoned house in an old mining town.  So I grabbed an iced tea and a slice of banana bread and we headed out the door.

The gun was just in case we got attacked by a mountain lion… WHAT?!

Little did I know 15 miles would take two hours!  It was up in the mountains by his house and the road was so bad we barely made it!

My grandpa is trying to stack rocks so we can make it past this wash with out tipping our truck!

We passed by the old mining town.  If you look hard in this picture you can see a chimney.  This is all that is left from a whole mining town that President Hoover worked in before he was president!

Of course my battery died (since I didn’t think we would be gone for 6 hours!) so I have no more pictures.

We finally got to the house.  It was at the top of this tall hill.  The road was so bad we couldn’t drive up to the house, so we walked the quarter of a mile up to the house.  When we reached the top, I saw a little glimpse of heaven!  Rusty metal everywhere covering the entire yard!  I started picking right away!  Two hours later we walked away with…

Two rusty metal bed springs

Rusty base of an old wash machine- this will be made into a coffee table!

Rusty car seat springs

An old metal display case from the general store

lots of door knobs

Sorry I don’t have any pictures :(   We are headed back to pick up everything next month so I will post pictures then.

It was a fun experience to go with my grandpa and hope to do it again soon!
